Should new memory be 100% error free?

Just got 8gb of new PNY DDR2 PC6400 memory from Best Buy. Running Memtest, a few hours in I got an error on one. The only error so far.

Should new memory be totally error free?

I don't think you should be getting errors if the memory setting are correct in the bios. I know normal desktop ram can get the odd error even if its working properly, this is why we have ecc memory on servers to protect against data loss or corruption. I suggest that you check all the settings in the bios are correct, remove any overclock you may have and try memtest again.

It should be, but that doesn't mean it is. New hardware can always be defective from the factory.

I'd double check that you matched the specific frequency, timings and voltage, first.

But, as above, even new sticks out of the box can have issues. They've probably been sitting around a while since DDR2 is pretty deprecated.
