Shut down laptop each night or keep powered on?

Hi: I have a new Dell 1420 with Vista Premium. I use my notebook throughout the day (use it for an hour or two then leave for a meeting and return an hour later, ect). My old Inspiron 8200, which was running XP Pro, was always powered on and plugged in and running day and night. With my new setup (1420 running Vista Premium) should I keep it on day and night, shut it down each night, put into sleep mode, ect? Thank you!

What I do overnight is put my laptop in sleep mode. It saves energy and I don't have a warm laptop the next morning.

desktops can be left on 24/7 without too much negative impact. laptops on the hand has less efficient cooling so the lifespan will decrease a lot faster compared to a desktop

Ok so what is the suggestion as to what I should do each night (sleep mode, hybernate, shut down completely)???

I have 2 laptops one that is over 6 years old that has never shut off just to reboot and its still running like a pro so saying it will reduce the lifespan is not true... They have sufficient heat distribution... Its up to you most pc's are fine to be on but if you want to save electricity i noticed about a 3 dollar a month change with my pc being off and the laptops off its up to you..

well i think that it does not really matter, sometimes i turn mine off, other times i leave it on, gl with that 1420, i hear looooots of horror stories, ie blue screen of death

I have lots of friends who have them and none of them have ever had a problem.

What i do is just put it in sleep mode, and then every day or two reboot it because it gets a bit clogged up after running for a while..

Shutting it down at night is just as good, it dosen't make too much of a difference.. Shutting it down will prevent having to reboot every now and then, and it gives you a fresh start each time you turn it on, however it takes longer.

If you don't mind waiting to turn it on in the morning, then shutting it down at night isnt a bad idea.
