When I try to turn off my computer it keeps coming up with a sprtcmd.exe not reponding error and won't turn off unless I "end now". What is causing this and how do I fix it? System is a Dell XPS Gen4, Windows XP Pro.Thanks

There's a free online scanner for repair of sprtcmd.exe errors you can try out at http://www.whatsrunning.net/whatsrunning/QueryProcessID.aspx?Process=7134

The problem is with a 3rd party help tool that starts up along with Windows provided for Dell by SupportSoft Inc.! This seems to be a common problem where you can simply use the msconfig selective startup option and simply uncheck the box next to that item or see if the free scanner at the first link or at TECHSPOT will correct this for you. http://www.techspot.com/startup/13330/

you can disable the restart on system failure setting. To do so, right click on My Computer and select the Properties command from the resulting shortcut menu. When you do, you will see the System Properties sheet. Click the Advanced tab and click the Settings button found in the Startup and Recovery section. Finally, deselect the Automatically Restart check box, shown in Figure A, and click OK.

Disabling the offender from auto loading along with Windows will prevent the shutdown problem until it is either repaired or removed. The startup recovery option is more for programs that crash while running them not when going to shutdown.
