Silly question!?

What do you mean by a fixed modem? If you mean onboard modem (the one you lappy comes with) then yes, assuming that you have dial-up internet access. Laptops don't come with routers or wireless modems (you can't connect to the internet using WiFi), though, so for wireless internet acces or broadband you need a wireless modem or a router (of course for WiFi you need a wireless router).

I think you're getting a few terms messed up here.

He can connect to the internet through wifi IF there's wifi where his laptop is (assuming his laptop has a built in wireless card, which almost all modern laptops do). Of course his laptop doesn't have a built in wireless router, but that's besides the point.

As for 56k modem, he can access the internet if you have dial up service. He just has to make sure his laptop has a modem first, as many new portable laptops don't.

I meant that you can not connect to the internet directly with the wireless card on your laptop, you'll need to go through a router that supports WiFi, which I mentioned.
