can i upgrade my cpu with other than that specified by my desktop manufacturer??

i have an HP Pavilion p6715me-m Desktop PC, and in its product specification page http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c02679497

it said i can upgrade my cpu with the following cpu only:

Motherboard supports the following processor upgrades:

  • Core i3-2xxx series
  • Core i5-2xxx series
  • Core i7-26xx series
So, Can I upgrade my cpu to other than this list like i5-6600??

No, as the newer CPUs are on a different CPU socket. The motherboard socket changed a few placement and pins between those generations. You may be able to look at the 3xxx series as those are the same socket 1155, but you would need BIOS support for those processors.

Realistically you'd be looking at a platform upgrade (motherboard, cpu, ram) if you wanted to update your desktop to the latest tech.

Find out if your board can support 3XXX CPUs with a BIOS update. If not, you will be stuck with a 2XXX CPU as the best you can get. An i7 2600K should be available for a little over $100 second hand somewhere online in your area.
