Simpletech External HDD Problems Again

Hey guys i'm back...with more problems :(

i have a simpletech external hard drive 160gb that is giving me trouble. I get the following error when I try to access it in "My Computer".

J:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

and sometimes it will let me in the drive but won't show anything and that's funny because i know stuff is on it
the drive is connected to a Windows XP computer
what do you guys think i should do to fix it so i can access my files
 
What USB interface you used should not matter, they are backwards compatible.
If you can get into the drive long enough, try a data recovery tool if you can't get into the drive long enough for that, try putting the drive into a computer and set it as a slave drive and try to run a data recovery tool.
And just some advice, but I wouldn't trust that HDD anymore if/when you get this fixed...

well i can't get into the drive at all while external...is there anyway i can still have it in the original casing and keep it external and fix it.. or recover it atleast...anyone?
