Single HDMI source to 2 monitors

Hi,

I currently have a Sony Vaio (only purchased recently) but I would like to connect it up to dual monitors.

I have had a look through lots of different methods but with no definite answer, hopefully someone can help!

My laptop has 1 HDMI port and 1 VGA port. Is it possible to connect my laptop to the 2 monitors with an extended desktop rather than displaying the same imagine on both screens?

The monitors I was going to buy also have speakers so it would be good if there was a way of using the HDMI port instead of the VGA. Would it be possible to use an HDMI splitter, then connect to the 2 monitors with 2 HDMI > DVI cables?

Any help would be much appreciated,

HDMI is technically DVI but with sound...

I have never tried it so I wouldn't know if and how good it works!

It baffles me that so many people think that this is possible.

Very few types of video out can support more than one independent display per port. HDMI is not one of those.
