Okay so i have done my reasearch pleny of it too. and im still wondering single or dual core. i want to play both old and new games. (im still addicted to starcraft lol) I have haerd that duals dont work very well with old games. and i dont no how hard it is to turn off one core so any help would be nice btw its between a x2 3800 or a athalon 3800+ not much pric diff so...

I would have to say, Dual Core. They might not be as good with old games, but how long will you be playing old games for. In the future when new games come out and they are dual core enabled, you will regret it. The dual core is future proof, you wont be living in the past forever.

I would not worry about a dual core making a big difference in old games. Get the dual core, you will love it! ;)

Dude... this is a pointless thread:cool: ...

Dual core is the way to go. Just think about it... single? or dual?:D

Besides it's an investment for the future... that's my excuse anyway:cool:

i have a dual cpu, and i love it!! I will tell you what i get in 3dmark and how i games play later tonight.

nobody likes single cores. they are cheaper though. basically there's no disadvantage to dual core except the lower frequency for the money.... and even then they're very overclockable (the AMD ones at least i know are)
EDIT: (got a 540mhz o/c out of mine!!! YAY haha)

but wat about the old games i still want 2 play starcraft will i be able 2 with a dual?

the dual core still runs really nice on starcraft,,
but if you really wish to use a single core, buy a dual core and you can only use the half of the core if you like...
means dual core can be used both dual core or single core...

starcraft is going to be far from taxing any processor out now, single or dual, my guess is you would see absolutely no difference between the two in that game, and you'll want dual later on for sure

Umm. Think about it... Old games dont use both cores, but who cares. THEYRE OLD!!! Low requirements for good quality. And in the new games, where your processor needs to be fast it will work fine. I wouldnt worry about having a dual core processor running a single core in an old game.

thats true, but even single-threaded games benefit from dual-cores since background programs and Windows processes get split up between the two, so it leaves more available cpu power for the game.

ahh... starcraft... what a great game... (reading required specs from back of case)

Windows 95 or NT 4.0
Pentium 90 or equivalent
16MB of RAM
80MB of disk space
2x CD-ROM for gameplay (4x for cinematics)
Local Bus SVGA video card (DirectX-compatible)
Microsoft-compatible mouse
DirectX-compatible sound card for audio

why can't all games require just that?

no i guess not... but i still regularly play it... that game was a graphic novel back when i used my pentium I running at 120 Mhz, 4x CD-ROM, 1MB graphic card and 16MB of RAM...

honestly it ain't much better than what i got to use now, lol, but a new one's coming for college...

Oh crap! I'm gonna need to spend a fourtune on my new PC to run that! :D
