single to dual setup questions

i did it. i sold my amd fx-57 and bought the fx-60. i have to ship this fx-57 soon, and i won't have a pc until the fx-60 comes in. i have a few questions about installing.

of course i know how to install the cpu, but should i uninstall the old cpu drivers first? what is the proper way to do it? in device manager? or will my computer automatically recognize the new cpu?

i also got the zalman CNPS 9500 cooler for it. the newer one with the green light in the fan. should go well with the 2 green cathodes i got with the plasma effect. i'll post a pic when it's all done, should be less than a week.

thanks in advance for any answers to the questions i posted today. i'll try to read replies from work once i pull this cpu out tomorrow, as my home system will be out for awhile. (i do have an old 500mhz celeron system i could dust off, lol)

So.... You finally made your decision there. The one thing that may be needed for the auto detection is the bios update. The support site will have an explaination on what each different bios version fixes or allows support for. On the board here the latest would have to be used in order to run the FX60 here.

so a bios update would be all i need? my system would autodetect it? no drivers to remove or install? i'm asking now because i don't want to run into problems installing it, and not have a pc to find help with. thanks

yeah, i bit the bullet. the tome was right, and the price was good. sold my 57, bought the 60, cost me like $107 out of pocket for the upgrade (plus $49 for the cooler). i think i'm more exited about the heatsink than the cpu, lol.

Nope. i had the same when i went from a 3000+ Venice to a 4800+ X2,.. i just had to flash the bios to r1.08+ ( i flashed 1.12 ( the newest one) into it, but 1.08 from my board supported dual cores)

just make sure your motherboard supports dual core CPU's... because if it doesnt, and you dont have a single core CPU to put into it for flashing,.. you have a problem i think

yeah, it's an asus k8v. the box says 64,fx,x2. i'll do it in the morning. i guess it'll have to be done BEFORE the dc proc is installed, right?

The one you never mentioned on the thread seen at http://www.computerforum.com/58962-upgrading-without-upgrading.html was the make and model board you have. At that time there wasn't any time to ask that one. That would be a help here if you need help finding the correct support link.

The information for each bios revision will tell you what it is for. Drivers for the board not a cpu. What an update does is set the bios to the correct voltage setting for the type of cpu going in by making a change in the programming there if needed.

welll... if the box already say's X2... it supports dual core CPU, then you wouldnt have a problem. ;)
but yes, if you would have to flash the bios in order to make it work, yes,.. you would have to use a single core CPU to flash it, since the dual core would just not work ( i think... i havnt hear of anyont trying yet,.. so im not sure weither a pc would run then or not,. but i dont guess its healthy for the hardware)

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us for the A8V! There is no K8V model.

The one update specified with the cpu finder is at http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx This just happens to be the latest update.

The cpu finder is found at http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx

well, i just flashed my bios. it already supported dual core, but i did it anyway. asus has that great autoflash thingy. i didn't have to look up anything. went from version 0218 to 0226. my board is an asus a8v.

all i have to dio now is drop the new cpu in when i get it, and put the new cooler on. thanks for the info guys. i just wanted to make sure all went right.

next upgrade will be video card and mobo. i want a pci-e to replace my agp card. i think i'm gonna go nvidia this time. i'd like to do sli later on. any suggestions? my x800 xt platinum edition is no sloucher, but there's alot better out now, i know.

The X850 was the one raved about when that came out. If you still want ATI you would go with a Crossfire board instead of an SLI model. Not planning on running a dual card setup here I haven't quite got around to running an ATI model yet. So far nVidia chipsets boot the system faster then VIA by a milestone! :P But I'm still an ATI fan. oh well...
