To use SLi, do both PCIe slots have to be 16x? I have a mobo with dual PCIe slots, but one of them is 8x. It says it's built for crossfire, which makes me think it's ok for SLi? Or am I way off.

A crossfire board and chipset cannot utilize SLI, that's nvidia's bag.

You can run nvidia cards, just not SLI them.

Sell your nvidia card and buy two identical ATI cards and use them in crossfire if compatible.I am saying compatibel coz you said that one of your slot is of 16x and another one is of 8x.And I think both slots needs to be of same kind.(just my opinion)

This is normal.

I agree with the others pick up an ATI crossfire card. Then later on you can buy another one for much cheaper and gain some easy performance/FPS. :)
