slight problem..

alright.. I just recently bought a new system and it's freezing up every now and then... here begins my story

I got everything all assembled and was wonderfully happy, but I hadn't installed xp yet. I tried several copies of xp and it would always give me a blue screen on installation. So then.. I switched out the IDE cables on an older computer and the new one, and ran a reformat and it worked perfectly.

My only problem now is that... my system will randomly freeze and reboot. I know it's not overheating, because I've been monitoring that. It seems to be hard drive related, but I'm not sure. When I try to download fear multiplayer.. it freezes. Also when i try to install a battlefield 2 patch, it freezes, and when I do a virus scan, it freezes. Also my harddrive makes clicking noises occasionally when being accessed.

My current system:

I'm using a harddrive from a friend.. maxtor I believe. I know the system's not that great but I'm saving up and buying parts.. incomes not so great when you're 17 and working for taco bell.. haha thanks for any help guys.

okay.. so I'm almost 100% sure it's a harddrive problem(kind of relieved.. I wouldn't want a problem with anything else).. the drive is clicking quite a bit, and I tried to use western digital lifeguard, but it freezes and reboots about 10 mins into the scan. Also, windows checkdisk gets to about stage 4 and will suddenly reboot. If you guys have any experience with failing hard drives please let me know.

now that you mention it.. my psu is 20 pin but is connected to my 24 pin motherboard. maybe I should try and get a 20 to 24 pin adapter?

hearing that... does your motherboard have that 4pin CPU connector?
and have you tried to run memtest86 (google for it, its the first link :) )

yeah my power supply is 400w, and came with my case, it has the 4 pin cpu connector though. my mobo booklet said that using just 20 pin may make the system unstable or unbootable.. any thoughts?

alright, well I'm not entirely sure it's my power supply. My system would run just fine as long as I didn't try to torrent anything or scan. I leave it on overnight and it runs just fine for menial tasks, and gaming(hl2,gta:sa,battlefield2). I ran checkdisk again, and it froze and rebooted during that. Also I ran western digital lifeguard's hard drive scan and it froze up during the scan and rebooted. Again.. my hard drive likes to loudly click quite a bit... when I play half life 2 I can tell it's accessing the page file by when the game freezes up and the hard drive clicks a bit(happens for about 1or2 seconds) To see if it's the problem I'm going to format and scan it with another computer of mine.

Buying another PSU is cool with me and all, I just want to make sure that's the problem so I don't go wasting money. Also I would eventually like to have a PSU that supports pci express.
