SATA or IDE, just like a full sized optical drive.
Wow...well I must say I've not seen optical slim optical drives with SATA connectors on them. All the laptops I've ever worked on have had the ATApi connectors. I guess I shouldn't be too suprised, but the "norm" seems to be this ATApi...

Both of those use sata.
You also need a special cable called slim sata:

Yeah my Inspiron has ATApi but, then I was looking on newegg and saw some sata ones so, I was confused.
After looking around I can really only find two ways to easily mount it in a desktop.

Slim what?
2.5" SATA hard drives have normal connectors, a normal SATA cable will be fine. 2.5" IDE drives need a special converter. In both cases, a proper mount would bea good thing.
I have no clue as far as laptop optical drives go, though, the connector on my Compaq which I disassembled was something I'd never seen before.
I must say, though, I have the awkward feeling I'm talking about an entirely different thing than you guys...
