Slim Drive in Desktop

Slim what?

2.5" SATA hard drives have normal connectors, a normal SATA cable will be fine. 2.5" IDE drives need a special converter. In both cases, a proper mount would bea good thing.

I have no clue as far as laptop optical drives go, though, the connector on my Compaq which I disassembled was something I'd never seen before.

I must say, though, I have the awkward feeling I'm talking about an entirely different thing than you guys...

Wow...well I must say I've not seen optical slim optical drives with SATA connectors on them. All the laptops I've ever worked on have had the ATApi connectors. I guess I shouldn't be too suprised, but the "norm" seems to be this ATApi...

Yeah my Inspiron has ATApi but, then I was looking on newegg and saw some sata ones so, I was confused.

Unless they changed it very recently, I'm pretty sure most of them have the ATApi connector. I know all 3 of my laptops do, my spare slim drive does, dad's older Dell does... Maybe I can check my grandparent's computer.

Just a note:

Of the 7 slim burners listed on Newegg, 6 of them are SATA.

There are also 2 CD-RW/DVD-ROM drives, one is ATAPI, one is SATA.

Wow... Alright, I didn't even realize they'd gone to SATA for drives too. Suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but seeing as most all of my drives are still ATApi.

I still would like to check my grandparents computer and see what kind of drive it has. Hmm...but alright, I was wrong. Come to think of it, I do believe I'd heard somewhere about slim SATA connectors, but didn't realize they'd switched internal slim drives over yet :P

After looking around I can really only find two ways to easily mount it in a desktop.

This:

And this:

As for the mounting im not going to use a drive bay. I have plans to take a chunk out of the bottom front bezel and mount it in there. This will free up my drive bays which. Then I am going to do something with the mesh covers to make it look much better.

Keep in mind: This is meant for a clean look and not just simply for the slim design

Yeah, 2.5" hard drives use standard SATA connections, but slim optical drives use a smaller connection. On drives with slim SATA connections, the data and power connection together is the same size as the standard SATA power connection alone.

So one like this needs the slim cable then?
