slow computer

Two computers here, one works fine- the other one is slow.

So here's the problem. If I run a game on my pc, (for instance Wolfenstein ET), it loads the program and gives me the finger. The mouse barely moves and the who computer becomes virtually unresponsive.

This computer has a P4 3.0Ghz with 1GB of ram and a 256 MB ATI Radeon GPU (S9250). I would think that this computer would run relatively fast.

I can run the exact same game on my laptop. My laptop runs with a 1.6Ghz Athlon (or something on that line) and around 3/4GB or ram. The video card doesn't have any more than 64 MB on it.

I've run CCleaner, and I've swept the computer for adware, malware, and viruses etc. I run speedfan to check the temps and its hot just a bit too often, but even at these hot temps, my laptop runs these kinds of games just fine.

Is my ram (even at 1GB) just too slow. If I buy more ram, am I limited to DDR ram (can you put DDR2 ram in a P4 system?)

Any other diagnostics I can run to route out the problem?

Oh, and I'm running XP on both computers.
And just to clarify, the PC (the P4 with 1GB of ram) is running slower than molasses.

Try reinstalling the program and see if it helps. RAM wise, depending on your motherboard, some support DDR and DDR2. Just depends on your motherboard. 1GB should be fine, but don't worry about it unless your games just don't run. Run a hard drive diagnostic if you can and see if it's reporting any bugs, cause there is a slim chance your drive is acting up.

im thinking 1GB of ram is not enough. XP uses about 256MB if I remember and then Wolfenstein...

It should be enough because my laptop can run the same game and it has half the speed.

I'll try uninstalling and putting a fresh copy in, but I have had some problems with other games in the past as well (Warrock, for example).

Even web based flash and java games can run slow.

Oh, I have an IBM ThinkCentre, if that helps.
