Slow computer

Can any body give a tip why is my computer too slow. It's too slow to start up, to open a program, and to connect to the internet and some times it freezes. Would it need a new memory to speed it up?
Any help wil be appreciated.
Thanks.

There are a number of reasons why a system will see slowdowns after a period of time. After a long time of use with a number of software changes you will have additional items starting up along with Windows. Eventually there will be what is often called "leftovers" or "orphans" in the system registry from past programs removed. And one simple tool for volume fragmentation of the hard drive is the use of the defragmenter tool included with Windows to maintain the hard drive.

The memory and other hardware upgrades depend mainly on the main use of the system itself. If you are running large programs or demanding games then you may have a need to increase the amount of memory installed. If you have only 256mb of memory installed(one example) and try to play some of the latest games out that will see problems due to the demands they can place on the available hardwares. What does your current system look like? will be the first question everyone will be asking.

You actually have 512mb of memory would the system board using the small difference of 64mb. Is this on a notebook or desktop? That helps but the model number will go further in recommending any upgrade of memory to 1gb. The specifications will show the options there.

This is a notebook.
Thanks.

This is a notebook.
Thanks.

It sounded like a notebook but just making sure. You forgot the model number however. :P That helps when going to look over the specs and seeing what it supports. Another 512mb of memory wouldn't be a problem there. But you first have to know what type is used. The closest match without a model number is seen at http://stores.tomshardware.com/search_techspecs_full.php/masterid=4577241

One place where you can select the memory by entering the serial number if you don't know the model number is seen at http://configurator.memorystock.com/index.asp?classid=101&mfrid=77 The PCG-K33 model seen at the first link points at PC2100 DDR266 memory as seen at http://configurator.memorystock.com/result.asp?MsClsID=101&MsClsName=&Mnfid=77&MsMnfName=&mn= VAIO+PCG%2DK33&modelID=48963 The one remaining question there would be whether that has two 256mb dimms installed. To be able to see a good 1gb of memory you then need two 512mb dimms.
