hey

I have extremely slow speeds on my fast adsl 2 + telstra broadband plan.

I have taken the ookla speed test and only receive 2mbps down 0.7mbps up.

Im using a combo modem/router unit. the N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router.
These tests were taken with my computer hooked up via ethernet with no one else connected to the internet and nothing running in the back ground.

My computer is very powerful so it wouldnt be the cause of the problem.

Im located 2.5km from the nearest exchange, with an estimated cable length of 3.5kms.

Recently called telstra and they ran some tests on my line and told me that the line was good and it was my modem which was causing the issue. i replaced my original thompson router/modem with the N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router, still the same speed.

going to call them up again tomorrow and see what is going on.

here are some statistics from my router

DSL
Line Status:Connected
DSL Modulation Type:ADSL_2plus
Annex Type:Annex A/L
Upstream Downstream
Current Rate (Kbps) 948 3652
Max Rate (Kbps) 984 3680
SNR Margin (dB) 5.9 6.2
Line Attenuation (dB) 28.8 52.6
Errors (Pkts) 0 0

I already made a post a few weeks back and did get some helpful advice, however i still suffer from the same problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

You should have just bumped your original thread instead of creating a new one.

However, according to your current rate and max rate numbers you are only getting 3.6mb download and less than 1mb upload. Try hooking up a different computer to your connection and do a speed test. Have someone bring in a laptop and connect via the ethernet cable. Could be your computer.

That SNR is still really low and probably prevents your modem from negotiating a higher rate with the DSLAM. 3.5 km probably isn't helping you either. As you can see from your modem stats, you were able to negotiate at a ~3.5/1 connection speed.

Telstra may be able to do something with the line to your house, if you can find the DMARC box outside and test your modem at that point it would rule out any noisy internal wiring for your home.

What speeds are you supposed to be getting?

Beers is 100% accurate. I don't know how installation goes in your country, but in the US the telecom box is typically right next to the electric meter, with an RJ11 port you can use for testing.

thanks for the input everyone.

sorry shouldve read the rules before creating a new thread.

Ive tried several computers separately and all of them cant get speeds any faster.

ill give them a call again soon and see what they say, also will have a look in the fuse box outside my house and let you guys know what is available.

the plan im on is 30mbps, my friend who lives a few houses down easily gets 20mbps download and is on the exact same plan as me.

As suggested above, find the demarc and connect the modem there. It could be dodgy wiring inside your place. If you get the same line stats then it's a problem on the carrier's network and they should be fixing it.

in australia we dont have a demarc box, so i cant test if my internal wiring is dodgy.
Where does your line come in? Try to trace the line from where it enters your house and see if you have a testing port, I'm willing to bet you do.

so i had another look this morning, this is the only box located on the outside of my house, have attached A photo of whats inside.

okay so i called telstra again today. They think that these are the bests speeds which are possible for me considering im 3.3km from the exchange however my friend who lives a few doors down is on the same plan as me and connected to the same exchange gets 20mbps download speeds. this is so annoying.

It's certainly close to the best speed based on your line stats.

You could take your modem and test it out at your friends place and see if it works at the same speed he's getting. Being new it should but you never know.
