Slow Internet speeds

My desktop internet speed is .5 mb/s and my wireless laptop is 7 mb/s. Shouldn't my desktop be faster than my laptop? What would be causing this? My desktop is horribly slow compared to my laptop. I can't watch a you tube video on my desktop, it takes forever to download, where on my laptop you don't have to wait for it. TIA
 
You could have malware or viruses on your computer causing the slowdown. You might need to update your network card driver on your desktop. There are many reasons why it could be slow. How old is this system? What are the cpu and memory specs for this system? Brand and model number of computer? Or is this a custom built computer?
 
I've had the computer about 2 years. It's a gateway 838GM with a pentium 4 3ghz processor.1.5 gb ram running xp service pack 3. I've scanned with malwarebytes, avast and spysweeper, cleaned my registry with ccleaner. Any other options?
 
Has it always been like this? or just happen recently? Any new software or hardware added?
 
My laptop works fine. The router is on the desk right next to the cable modem, right next to my desktop.
