slow non-responsive behaviour new build

Hi, I've recently upgraded my desktop, and I'm having problems with it running slow, and not responding/crashing alot.

Mainly, it takes ages to shut down, occasionally giving one of those error messages ("the memory at...reference.....could not be 'written'/'read'), but also often when I run an application it will fail to load at all, or load and crash (In this case ctrl+alt+del doesn't work, the mouse may or may not move, and I have to do a soft reset with the button on my case). When the computer reboots, the same application will usually load and run properly, and the problem happens with a load of different applications.

Heres what I tried:

-defragged my hard-drive multiple times, which is now defragged nicely.
-ran a complete virus (avast) and spyware/malware (super anti-spyware) tests, neither of which reported anything
-sorted through my processes and start up items, and got rid of anything I didn't need.
-checked all my drivers were working properly which they were.
-deleted all the crap off my computer (I'm still using an old hard drive, which I've had for a few years, so I deleted all the files and programs I didn't need any more)
-Ran memtest86+, which showed no memory errors after a complete pass (I should hope so, since its about 2 weeks old).

I don't know what else I can try. Heres my new hardware:

PSU:
Coolermaster Real Power 620w Modular Power Supply
MOBO: Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3 Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)
RAM: Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x2GB) with airflow fan.
GPU: EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+ 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (01G-P3-E880-AR) (overclocked slightly, but running stable)
OS: Win XP PRO SP3 (32-bit)

and my old hard drive: 250GB SATA Maxtor DiamondMax 21

(as well as periphials such as floppy/cd drives and pci parallel port card/network card, which have never caused me any problems.)

I think the only other possible explanation could be hardware incompatibility or maybe something wrong with the hard drive, but I don't know how I can test it. Can someone let me know if my hardware is stable, or what I can do to sort out this problem?

Also, I recently bough Assassins creed, and with moderate graphics settings I'm getting a really low frame rate like 10-12FPS, but I would have thought my hardware could almost max that game out. I'm not sure if this a problem with xp only having dx9 and not dx10, or if it is part of the same problem causing the crashing etc.

P.S. I might be getting this new HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache, and hopefully installing vista on it. Should I get 32-bit or 64-bit, and which version?

Thanks alot

get the 64 bit, its the same price somtimes cheaper, and it can reconize all four gigs of your ram,

the only thing i can think of slowing it down is your harddrive, do you have a harddrive censor?

like on most cases heres a orange light that blinks when the harddrive is in use, my friend nates before i fixed up his computer was on constantly, and it took 20 minutes for anything to load, now its like fast, it is instant in everything

check to make sure your harddrive isnt working its butt off if it is, and you dont know why it might be a bum harddrive

Thanks, one of the main reasons I thought about 64-bit is because of my ram, as at the moment only 3.5GB is recognised, however I'm not sure when it comes to software. I use alot of different types of software for my degree programme including MATLAB, PSpice, Proteus, and Solidworks, and I'm not sure if they'll all be compatible with 64-bit. I'm also wary of other draw backs that 64-bit might have over 32-bit, and because of this I'm unsure as to whether 64-bit is the way to go.

Anyway, about my problem I have a HDD indicator LED on my case, which as expected is mostly idle when the system is idle, but when I start an application, Assassins Creed for example, it shows alot of activity as expected, until it crashes, and the LED idles again. Is there any software diagnostics for harddrives that I can use like memtest for RAM?
