Slow running laptop and a few minor issues.

The issues are mainly just annoying, but may indicate a bigger problem.

I use Mozilla firefox, but when I try to press the + button to open a new tab nothing happens. I now have to right click on links and press the 'open in new tab' to get a new tab going.

Secondly my search bars in the top right hand corner, I want this to be set as google search, so i change my options and its done. However next time I reboot my laptop it goes back to another option. No matter how many times I do this it always switches back.

Thirdly, when I go to shut down my laptop, it ALWAYS pops up with 'waiting for programs to end', even though I have closed everything down. I occasionally leave it to finish on its own but usually just click 'force shut down' and it then shuts down without problems. But its just a worry that its telling me something is running that I obviously can't see.

Lastly my laptop has got singificantly slower. This is mainly on start up. I have to leave it a good few minutes to settle, then when first opening up a web page it takes forever to pop up. Also when trying to load internet pages it occasionally comes up not responding, after leaving it for a few minutes it starts running again.

Please bare in mind I am only able to get online generally on Mondays and Tuesdays, so if my response is delayed please do not give up on me!

I have done a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan, but when I try to do a HijackThis scan it comes up with an error saying my system denied access to the hosts file, i follow the steps to edit the files myself but the HijackThis reports are simply not there. If I continue it explains there is no save file do i want to creat one, I click yeas and nothing seems to happen?

After rebooting my computer for some reason google has now remained as my search bar, so that issue seems to have resolved itself.

I decided to have another go with HijackThis, thinking it may be a compatibility issue, after right clicking the shortcut and ran 'troubleshoot compatibility' it came up with the option for new settings, which I accepted (it says they are Windows XP Serice pack 2). Then I ran the program again and voila. It works....
