Slow running PC - how can I sort it?

Hi again,

My PC has been running slowly for a while, and despite having tried all manner of spyware, adware and virus software, the problem still persists.

I expected my PC to run a bit slower the older and fuller it got, but it's now at the stage where it takes about 10sec for a window to open up once double-clicked.

I've tried uninstalling as much of my programmes and documents as possible, but it still runs slowly.

Is there anything more I could try or an I looking at a re-install? And if I need to re-install, how do I go about it? My XP disk just says it can't re-install because there's a newer version installed (having downloaded updates).

Cheers,

just put the cd inside, turn off the computer . turn it back on, the computer should say "press any key to install windows", press any key. then selec "intall windowns" the next skreen will show something about your old system, just press F8 and it will continue. make sure that you safe all your documents and music and stuped stuff you find important. oh ..umm. make sure you have a a spear computer,so you can ask questions later if the computer dont want to start, peace

Insert your XP CD, restart and go to select boot to CD and you can install your XP from there(fresh install or repair) whichever you wnt to do. :)

Ok guys, - update time!

I have my XP CD in and when I reboot and press F8, it gives me the following options...

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Config
Director Services Restore Mode
Debugging Mode
Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure
Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

So which one do I need, and then what?

thanx

Try not pressing F8 and if it askes if it should boot from cd let it. You press F8 later (if I remember correctly to agree to the license agrement).

It just boots up normally, without even looking what CD is in the drive.

Am I right to be trying to reinstall from the originial XP disk? Or should I be using some other "re-boot" disk?

try going into your bios and change one of the boot sequence to cd-drive or somthing.. then restart
when it says "press any key to boot from cd" thats your queue...;)

Yes enter your bios by hitting the delete key or other (depends on computer) and change boot sequence to boot from cd-rom first (look for it you'll stumble apon it) Also you can hit f8 on some machines b4 the computer has "completly posted" to get a boot menu where you then can select the drive to boot from.
