slow start up

just installed a fresh copy of xp and installed all the updates. There is a 30 sec blank screen between the windows xp screen that has the bars that go left to right and the xp welcome screen. The hard drive is not going neither are any of the other storage devices. Any way I can get rid of that pause?

Get a faster computer jk. Try to defrag the hard drive, run a registry mechanic tool, get rid of any unwanted desktop items. Also there is a slight chance its your power so i would try to make sure all of the power sources are plugged and snug. I used to have the same problem but i forget what happened, so it might just go away over time. I really have no clue.

What are your computer specs?

It's my dads computer, the hard drive fried so I'm fixing it for him.
HP pavillion 761c pentium 4 1.9hz I think
Brand new western digital 160gb 7200 hard drive
1gb ram, I just installed 512 of the 1gb

thought there was some kind of tomeout setting or something in windows that could be changed that would cause this. Not sure.

There is a timeout if you have dualboot...
You can make the WindowsXP screen (the one with blue bar) to disappear faster though.
But that not what you mean i guess...
Don't really know what migh cause your problem to be honest :(
Sorry...

I wish someone might expound on the "unwanted desktop item" part. I'm not really sure how to do this, but I wonder if it might help my start up go faster. My computer is starting to worry me actually.

Also, is it true that you start getting bits and parts of file accumulation over time that cause your computer to slow down? If so, what can you do about that? I will try a defrag, but I'm wondering if there's a way to remove some of the pc flotsam. Any thoughts?
