Slow Wifi

When I'm on my laptop and I want to watch youtube or anything like that the video needs to buffer every 10 seconds, even 10 feet away from router but when its plugged in with an ethernet cord its instant.

I have a wireless-N linksys router with a broadband connection, but I don't have the software for the router installed on my main computer could this be the problem or what else could it be?

You do not need the router software installed on any computer to make the router work. Do you have another wireless device that you can try? Its either the wireless or the wireless adapter in your laptop. See if there are any updated drivers for the wireless card.

Are there any obstructions between your laptop and the router (like walls)? What other RF transmitting devices are in the area (cordless phones, maybe)?

same loading speeds on my asus laptop macbook pro and iphone.

Even if I'm in the same room as the router the loading speeds are the same.

I have a wireless phone upstairs

Only 2 other things to do here then. Try upgrading the firmware on the router or try a different router.

You might try reorienting your router, as well-- sometimes the signal isn't quite as omnidirectional as they would have you believe
