Slowing computer

I have a p4 with ddr ram, 160gig hard drive.

I have alwas played everquest and verius other games on my system but my friends started messing with my pc and ever since then i cant play my games anymore. when i go to cast a spell the games delays a sec or 2 before casting. also it has weird fragmented sound. like a scratched cd. (also does the sound thing when you start up windows) but yeah...it seem to be using more memory then usual, without tunning any programs it says it already using 547 out of 1gig of ram. I think that might be what causing the issues with my games. i dont know mabey i should just start saving for a new pc.
 
If you've recently installed vista that would explain it.
Are you running xp? If so try using ccleaner to clean the cache, running anti-spyware software and then defraging the hard drive. I wouldn't use the windows defragment system since there are open-source alternatives which do a better job. try those before anything, as it could be your friends accidentally installed malware, or spywares on your PC.
 
I am actually having the same problems. I have a P4 3.0 GHz laptop with 1 GB of RAM and it used to be able to play Oblivion at full settings, but now I can hardly even play Max Payne 2 at low settings, which is quite sad. I've done everything, I've ran optimization programs, CCleaner, I've reinstalled windows, defragged, cleaned up my registry, everything. I think the P4 just has a limited lifespan?
 
oblivion at full settings takes well over 256MB of Vram, which is well above the limits for most laptops. it also will push your system far beyond 1GB ram on full, my AMD 3400 is a better processor, and it struggles to play that game very much. i also have more ram, which is almost maxed out on that game.

sometimes systems just slow down, but first ask your friend what he did to your computer eh? most computer savvy people will want to fix it themselves because they feel only THEY can, but just ask him what he did and make no inclination to change it back, lest you want to start an arguement... i would know lmao... :rolleyes:
 
okay not at full settings, but at the lowest settings possible I get 15 FPS where at medium to medium-high settings I used to get about 60.

Upgrade memory, defrag, CCleaner, Registry Mechanic, AVG, Avast, Spybot, SpywareBlaster.

Otherwise, an fresh reinstall would help ALOT.
