hi, thispast june a bought a $2,200 dell inspiron 600 all kacked up with media center, great graphics card, screen, etc... However, i did not upgrade the memory, so i only have 1.8 maybe or 1.6 (something lik that) ANYWAY, when i got the laptop, nothing was wrong with it, i loved it more than anything. In fact it was pretty fast. However, now it is extremely slow. Just clicking on internet explorer it takes maybe 35 seconds for the internet screen to pop up (35seconds is a long time). And its not lik i have all these programs running in the background. Can someone please help me!

ok most likely cause is a virus or something cause that is a lot of time, so do a virus scan, or if you don't have one get one free offline, I know of AVG Free and it's alright. Secondly, have you ever degragmented your hard drive? That will make a huge difference if you've never done it. Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter and defragment your hard drive. It might take it a long time but that should help out a lot as well. I don't understand what you're talking about when you say you have 1.8 or 1.6 memory, do you mean that's all the space left on your hard drive? If so you need to get an external and take a lot of stuff off cause that will slow down your computer a lot too, it might not even let you defrag for lack of space.

He's may talking about the Ghz. But yes, systems slow up in time. Usually it's just because of build up of junk downloaded from the internet. Such as Ad-ware and other useless crap. People will swear that they dont do anything or download anything, but when I get my hands on it, I'll see like over a thousand bugs/problems on it. Not saying people are liars, but they dont really know when it's downloaded, it's normal. Heck, I format my own drive maybe 1-2 times a year anyways just because I've got a build up of junk that I no longer or never used too. An adware scan, virus scan and a defrag (like suprasteve said) will do you good, but if you can afford to restore your system, then I would do it. Some dont want to because they've got a lot of stuff that they dont want to loose or don't want to have to back up all their stuff.
 
You could also try to reduce the number of programs that start up when Windows stats up. Go to Start > Run > and type msconfig > then go to the Startup tab and deselect any programs you do not need to startup when windows starts up.

thank you all who replied; my computer is faster than before (yes i did mean ghz, sorry about that). However, if there are anymore ideas that anyone has about how to make it faster, i would appreciate it!

im guessing that is a pentium M? since it costed 2,200. so its pretty fast.

well, with all the things listed.. disk clean up, defragmentation, virus scans, spyware scans..

you can also benefit from things like.
a registry cleaner. find free ones at www.download.com

deleting the the prefetch. it is located in c:\windows\prefetch
- delete whatevers in there. atleats once a month. NOT everyday, other day, or week

do you put your computer in hibernate? if not, you should disable it and it should free up some disk space.
go into control panel>power options>hibernate
if it is checked, uncheck it

and there are also many tweaks available that you can use that deals with your registries. if you are familiar with the registries and would like to take that route, let me/or us know.
 
hey, I'm having some probs with a slow laptop too. quite similar to the topic creators. I'm familiar with the windows registry, how to back it up, how to alter it and all that gud stuff............ got any useful tweaks you wud like to share?
