I'm new to this forum so firstly hi to everyone!!

I'm posting on behalf of my dad who has aquired the smitfraud virus on his pc. Any ideas how he can remove this because he can't access the internet at the minute and his computer is nearly dead!

Many thanks

Lisa

hi lisa and welcome to the forums

if you dad has any computer anti-virus software...id recommend you use it ASAP...you will probably have to wipe out if the virus is affecting the internet ... how do you know which virus he acquired? has he used antivirus already?

tell him to back up all of his important files to disk or if he can CD...the only problem is is that if he burns a CD with a virus on his computer, there is a probability that it will burn itself onto the CD...so if possible get an antivirus and use that to remove it..

if you can access the internet from whatever computer YOU'RE using, then download AVG or the norton trial. AVG is free to use, so it should help him out, as well as the norton trial

keep us posted on what happens..and good luck :)

Thanks for the replies. He knows what it is as it's gone and put itself into about 5000 files!!! He started deleting them and suddenly his computer stopped working!!! He runs AVG anyway. He's tried the disc he got to completely wipe it and start over but it won't even let him do that!! I'm going over later (when I get up, I'm on a night shift :( to see if I can sort it out but i'm really not holding out much hope!!!) He's not bothered about losing any files that are on there.

Seems that he managed to get this adorable little virus from a pop up that appeared that told him he had 30 different lots of spyware on his pc and did he want to run a full check. He pressed yes and got another pop up telling him that if he paid 32 dollars, they would send him a program to remove the offending virus!!! Great scam for the company sending it but really not good for pc owners. He's talking about just throwing the computer away and buying a new one!!!! I'll try and sort him out.

Thanks again for your help on this.

Lisa :D
