Smoke Emission

So, I have a SB build and all was just dandy. Well, today I received my replacement motherboard (Gigabyte p67aud3b3) and installed it in place of the old (Gigabyte p67AUD3). Well, I booted up the PC and about 5 seconds after it started, there was a flash and a puff of smoke inside the PC. Naturally I shut it down immediately.

Here's the weird part. I started it up again with the same PSU to see if it had fried (please don't comment on my massive lapse in judgment >_>), but it started up no problem. No smoke, no flash, nothing. All the components are recognized and working properly, I even ran some stress tests and no error messages popped up.

Has that happened to anyone else? I'm going to replace the PSU immediately because I'm not taking any chances, but why is it that everything still runs as if nothing happened despite that flash and smoke emission?

Are you sure the smoke came from the PSU? It could have just as easily came from any of the other components. As for why it still works, well not every component in a computer is essential for making it run. I'll admit, there isn't too much excess in a PSU, which is why I am a bit surprised that it would still power up if the smoke did come from the PSU, but it would be easy for something on the motherboard to fry and not cause an immediate problem if that particular component was part of a disabled or little used feature.

with the power off, in a brightly lit room, i would check every inch of the board for burn marks or melted stuff and everthing else in the case, if nothing then i would look in the power supply. And i definitly would not use it til i found the problem.

If the PSU is quality, then there will be over voltage and under voltage protection amongst others. You may have been lucky. I wouldn't use that PSU again however.
