smoke on computer!!!!

psu cooking would be a likely culprit in my opinion. also and electrical fault could cause lots of current to be drawn down the internal wiring causing the plastic to smoulder.
also a chip getting very hot would give off a certain amount of smoke but i dont think it would be as much as a psu
 
If it's been sitting for a long time and you just turned it on it could have been a dust fire. The dust will catch fire then immediately go out but it creates a lot of smoke and it smells horrible. Had a TRS-80 that did that to a friend after it had been sitting in his basement for 10+ years, stunk up the whole house and set off the fire alarms.
 
Most any electronics give off smoke when they burn out, so it could be lots of stuff... If you were more specific where the smoke came from, we could be more helpful ;)
