I'm looking to buy a pretty good graphics card that is up to par with the Doom3 and Half-Life 2 graphics. I'm just not sure if i can go out and buy any card i want or if there are certain requirements that my mother board must have. What card do you recommend that will play HL2 and Doom3 in good quality and what should i check for in my computer?
 
When buying an AGP card, check the voltage of your AGP slot in your motherboard, they measure it like this, 2x, 4x, 8x and so on, the card you will buy must match this voltage or else you might have real trouble.

For a card, I came to a conclusion that the Nvidia GeForce is a better solution for gaming machines than the ATI, so consider a 256 MB GeForce Card.

Which 256 MB card, some other one might answer you as I don't know the options of such cards outside Egypt :D You know things like this come a little bit late here in Egypt and you might have newer stuff on stores than the ones we have.

Actually I would recommend this one, GeForce FX 5200 Video Card, trying searching for it over the internet and see.

I know nothing about the eVGA GeForce, but I think I saw it as one of the top 5 graphics card, it was #2 as far as I remember, it's fine, not over kill if your board and processor can handle the card :)

You can check the voltage in your mother board manual or by searching for the board specs over the internet, preferably on the manufacturer website.

The GeForce FX 5200 will not handle Doom 3 good at all.

No, Doom 3 players that are looking for some good graphics should get an up-to-date graphics card.

note: make sure you have the correct slots (AGP or PCI-X, if you change you mind..), and sufficient power supply. Mind telling me your current specs?

I didn't know that they measure voltages like that.. where did you hear of it?

Well this is written on merely every mother board manual, they usually give you a warning. 2x, 4x and 8x and the likes are actually equiv to some certain voltage, 3.3v and so on.

good graphic card and geforce fx 5200 dont go togeather. The geforce 5200 is and always has been a low end graphic card.

radeon x950 xt!!!!!! 512 mb!!!!!

not even on the market yet and proberly will be a ridiculous cost when it first comes out.

I agree with this, I never buy anything on it's first release, if it proves to be buggy, then I have lost it and lost the money too :)

It's a piece of crap. It's claim to fame is that its the cheapest DX9 card available :) Older cards like the GF4MX440 tend to equal and sometimes surpass it.

Don't buggy like in software, I meant performance :)

So what do you think about the GeForce2 MX400 64 MB?? That's my card right now :D

Uh.. old? You don't need a really nice gfx card unless your gaming, or need some kinda workstation card for work or something.
 
The multiplier in APG (2X, 4X, 8X) is the speed of the bus.

ATI and Nvidia are great cards, many people only like one brand.
this would be my recomendation

ATI 9600PRO $85
Geforce MSI or Gigabyte 6600GT $175
ATI X800XL $300

The Ati X800XL is curently the best graphics card that doesn't get to expensive.
Its about $200 cheaper then the ATIX850XTPE or the GF6800Ultra but you will only see a aprox. 20% lower speed.

I bought the X800XL, I play Half life 2 at 1600X1200 with graphics maxed out. very nice card. How ever I would recomend the ATI made cards (all ATI card have ATI chipsets, but im refering to the company that makes the boards).

Oh and dont buy a card becuase of the amount of video RAM.

Only thing that card has is T&L practicly no Hardware shaders.
