I just bought a laptop and it comes with tons of shit I'd like removed. I"m not sure which things I should remove or how I would go about figuring out what's crap & what's essential. Any suggestions? A lot of these things I've never heard of.

ok, post a list of programs and we can tell you what to remove:

Well post a list of your programs. This how you do it:

  • Download Hijackthis from here
  • Open Hijackthis
  • Click on "Open Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Open Unistall Manager"
  • Click on "Save List"
  • Save it in a location
  • Notepad will open
  • Hit Ctrl + A
  • Copy + paste in a forum reply

From the list of programs, we can tell you what ones to uninstall.

P.S. - Pls refrane from swearing.

If it's not part of Windows or Software related to keeping Windows up-to-speed, it's not essential. Things like the Photo programs, ISP things, Yahoo Mail, Google Toolbar, etc can be removed via Add/Remove Programs. I would check in there first and go through starting from the top. Certain things must be uninstalled from their specific Uninstallation Program, rather than have an outside App do it.

Also, HJT is *not* the end-all deciding factor to speeding up a computer, as someone seems to think it is and Posts it *constantly*. This is really kind of getting robotic...

deleting junkware was literally the first thing i did when i booted up my new laptop. do what imsati said and go to Add/Remove Programs start deleting anything that looks like junk, which may include: trial subcriptions to anti-virus, trial Vonage, AOL, google, yahoo, etc. do yourself a huge favor and get rid of the trial anti virus; when it expires it will absolutely annoy the crap out of you. just download AVG-free 8.0 and save yourself the annoyance :)

I wish you had the option to install the OS on the machine yourself. Then you don't have to get rid of all the garbage.

I'd double check first via Google (they don't appear to be driver packages), but you can probably get rid of the ASUS utilities. Also, a matter of personal preference, but Symantec = Devil. You'd probably notice a LOT more speed if you removed Norton from your system and went with another AV Program instead. There are some free ones out there, too that work great; or if you have COmcast High Speed Internet, the entire MacAfee Suite is your for free:)

You get get rid of the Speakerphone Modem (wow...) too. Also, if you don't watch DVD's on it, the Nero Application can go, too.

BTW, is your name any reference to SF2?

Aren't my instructions good enough?

Again, HTJ is not the end-all tool to speed up/maintain a computer. Sometimes you actually need to do some manual digging rather than let a pretty little script run.
