so my hard drive died this morning...

Now as I wondered why it died, I searched the internet for reasons. I heard a noise, a hard drive clicking in a sense, but the internet said this could be caused by an internal physical problem with the drive or an electric problem. Which brings me to my point, two of my usb ports will work sometimes and not other times. And it's not the wiring because in the front, there are two ports, and only one of them has the flickering power problem, same in the back, except 1/4 ports has the power flickering problem. Also, I use vista's voice recognition, (it's really quite fun =P), and my mic will sometimes just stop working for 3-4 seconds every 10 minutes or so. this happens with very close timing, almost in sync, to the usb flickering problem. SO, finally, to my question, is it my power supply's fault for all of this because i don't wanna install a new hard drive just to have it be broken instantly? I wouldn't suspect it if it was only the usb ports having this problem. And the hard drive died while I was deleting the readyboost cache off a flash drive, printing something, and checking my rss feeds. I had heard the clicking sound about once a day leading up to that point for a few weeks now.

lol sorry i wrote so much, but for those who have taken the time to read this, I give you my gratitude, and this smiley ->:D

(oh, and fry's has a deal on their website for a 7200rpm 200gb maxtor sata for $49. it's about $70 at the store. i ordered it =D.)

Hmm..did you build this yourself, or is it a prebuilt? What motherboard is this? It sounds like something i failing on the motherboard, a capacitor or something of the like...the harddrive symptoms you described however are synonymous with the infamous "Click of Death"...basically, the thing that reads the disk is off the it's track, and is trying to correct itself. Quite often it is indicative of looming harddrive failure.

It does, however, sound like something power-related is going on, whether it be your motherboard or power supply...download SpeedFan and see if the voltages are stable.

the new hard drive ships monday, so i can't do any diags out of bios.

it was built by ibuypower in october of 2005. the motherboard is an ASUS p4p800 se...specs, if they help:
3.2ghz p4ht
1.5gb ram
radeon 9800 all in wonder...
erm, one thing i should mention..the power problems began after installing vista, (not a beta, the RTM version), back in november..if worst comes to worst, i'll turn off aero or go back to xp
