I was reading somewhere about social media marketing being the most valuable marketing you can do.
A friend sent me this... http://www.icontact.com/resources/social-media-marketing-guide but I was wondering mainly about twitter. Does it take a long time to build up followers? At what point do you start pushing your product? Or do you just wait for people to follow and start asking. I know I'm put off by in your face marketing, just wondered how other people do this while striking the right balance between subtle and BUY THIS NOW kind of thing...

Social media is the best way to reach the masses for any purpose nowadays, the only thing to be careful of is not to put people off with constant nuisance marketing.

I think most people are like myself they do not mind getting the odd marketing/promotion email etc, but it annoys people if it is regular pestering stuff.

A sign of any serious company these days is to have pages on facebook and twitter.

you should really do some research on things that you see everyday. focus on products you use regularly and then record the types of advertisements you see. I'm sure there is decent variation in the types of ads coming your way. I think that would be the easiest way to get comfortable and then start branching out

Thanks all.
I think the key is to build up relationships with people and not just push your product. You need to make people want to find out what you sell I suppose, rather than get fed up with you constantly going on about it.
