socket 754 and 939 question

A simple question from a n00b...

I have a socket 754 motherboard and an Athlon 64 3200+, they both work fine. If I got a socket 939 board, would the processor still be compatible?
 
No since the processor is designed for socket 754.. meaning 754 pins on the CPU... so it would not fit in a socket 939. You would have to get a socket 939 AMD Athlon64 3200+ or something better.
 
cpus like athlon64 3200+ is made in 2 different forms,
socket 754, OR socket 939,,, since yours is socket 754,
stick with your old motherboard
 
don't mean to jack the thread, but quick question...

is there a difference between the 754 and the 939 if they're both AMD64 3000+?

754 mobo's support Hyper transport up to 800MHz while the 939 skt. mobos support up to 1000MHz HT


EDIT: Performance wise? I dunno if there is any difference between the skt. 754 and skt. 939 CPU's

i believe a 754 3400+ performs as good as a 939 3700+...
because the 939 socket has 1ghz hypertransport and the 754 socket has 800mhz, so a 754 3700+ is at 2.4ghz (800fsb) whereas the 939 3700+ is at 2.2ghz(1000fsb).
but since hypertransport normally doesnt effect performance as much 754 socket cpu's normally perform better for the price...
only thing is the 1. 754 doesn't support higher than the 3700+ and 2. 754 doesn't support dual core or dual channel ram (the 754 processors only have a single memory controller, and 939 have dual memory controllers)

Most 754 mobo's only have 2 DIMMS as well, and most of them only support AGP cards.
