what is the main difference between the two? is it worth going to the 939? right now i am running an asus k8n motherboard (socket 754) with an amd athlon 64 3000+.

Basically the difference is dual channel memory support. Since you have a 754 right now and it sounds reasonably new (1-1.5 years old?) I'd suggest riding it out until you want to do a major upgrade.

i believe then next socket type will be socket M2, correct me if im wrong... i'm also sure i heard that it will support DDR2.... i think that would be the one to hold out for

Lol

Hey, I think that if you are considering an X2, socket 939 is the way to go. However, I do believe that it is NOT worth upgrading from socket 754. The dual channel limitations is nothing huge anyway.

amd did say that they would support dd3 in their dual cores by 2007 some time last year. Their were also recent that the m2 socket would be skipping ddr2 and moving to ddr3, pci express2 and wimax.
This would have been a good move for amd, holding off untill ddr3 makes good business sence and would allow them to bring itto market before intel. Butit seems as though they have choosen to bring in ddr2 afterall, hoping to phase it in the august time of this year for the 939 skt.

Wonder if they'll make it a DDR2/DDR3 combo-controller... prolly wont be able to cram that within the silicon constraints though
