so ive been looking pretty hard at dual core cpu's and ive seen that a new socket is being developed. the 940. its called something else though. im wondering if its worth it to buy dualcore now or to wait until mid 2006?

940 is already out, single core and dual core AMD opteron's work on them.

Just get a dual core A64, it will most likly be better, becuase the opteron's are made for server's.

The new socket will be named the M2, but will have 940 pins. Also, I hear something about a socket F for opterons with 1,207 pins.

Yeah, for opterons its socket F and I believe it will be an LGA. Untill we see more on socket F we're probably not going to see more on socket M2, just like socket 940 and 939.

i think what he was implying is that the rumored M2 socket is going to have 940 pins.
id say if you got money now, spend it now... what the use in waiting since a 939 dual core processor will last you 5 or more years the way it looks..
also THG says M2 will run hotter and more power usage than 939. thats rumor though, and theory.

GET IT NOW!... it will last you many years.

Socket AM2 (as its now called) does have 940 pins but isn't pin compatible with the existing 940 pin processors.
939 is still a good option even though it is about to superceded by AM2. if money is your limiting factor then i would go with 939, if not then i would go with AM2.
as for socket F that will only be used on server systems, and the reason there are so many pins is that the PCI express bus will be integrated into the the chip (i read that some time ago, cant remember where)

Sweet. Integrated PCI express. That would mean that it wouldnt have to pass through the northbridge/southbridge? Or am I geting this wrong lol.

yeah, the northbridge is integrated into the chip as far as i can tell. i can see that technology making into the desktop market pretty soon afterwards though. which means another new platform for AMD users :(

Hehe yay for integrating everything into the chip ... kills the latencies but makes platform upgrades a pain :P
