I am looking for the set of components that would fit in a 4U rackmount chassis and be able to run 24/7, the usual server stuff. The server would be expected to make SQL database calls on nearly every page requested for three separate websites, transfer large amounts of data (think a file server) and run an active (100+ members, 25,000+ posts) forum.
Which configuration would provide the best stability and lowest cost for the next four years, the expected operation time before significant upgrades such as a new processor or motherboard? Yes, I am aware that the 939 and 940 will be faster, but does it make that much of a difference over a Socket A in terms of end-user speed? I am looking for a fast end-user solution that is cheap as well.
If you dont see the perfect setup listed, please feel free to suggest other mobos and processors.
Option 1:
Socket A mobo with DUAL processors, either Athlon XP 1600+ or 3200+ (depending on price)
Maximum DDR RAM (4GB)
Option 2:
Socket 940 mobo with ONE Operton 250 2.4 GHz
3 GB DDR RAM
Option 3:
Socket 939 mobo with DUAL CORE Opteron 170 2.0 GHz
3 GB DDR RAM
Thanks,
Rhyeal
