Sockets?

I want to buy a new CPU for an old laptop I have, I know the socket type tells you if it fits into the Motherboard but how can I tell what socket type the computer is using now? If it helps its a pentium III in a Toshiba Tecra 8100.
 
The prossesor I want is 775 socket, also are there any other compatibility issues you might face when getting a new proccesor?
 
a pentium 4 will not fit into a pentium 3 socket, there isn't even an adaptor that would do the job (not that it would fit into a laptop anyway).
you would only be able to put another pentium 3 processor into there anyway. i believe you would be looking for a socket 370 pentium 3. however, i also believe that if you do upgrade you would suffer from cooling problems as a result of the upgrade.
 
So basically there are no options, unless I cange the Motherboard? The Processor I wanted was a Celeron D is that makes a difference.
 
you cant change the motherboard for that laptop with a different one, and the celeron you mentioned has the same pin configuration as the pentium 4.
 
In his signature it says that he has a Pentium 4 (IIII) 2.80ghz, which seems more common than a Pentium 3 2.8. I don't think Intel even made a 2.8 P3. Did he mean Pentium IIII but just forget an I?

his laptop has a pentium 3 inside it :)

the fastest p3 ever made as far as i'm ware was about 1300 MHz, the laptop SAAER45 is talking about has an 800 MHz processor. please read the post properly, i know i dont always do it but i manage to at least read the important bit to get the right info out of it. BTW i was wasn't singling out the thechef there :)
