Software for cleaning registry?

Computer-Numpty

As my name indicates - numpty here! I have Windows XP, and use Internet Explorer. However, for the past few weeks my computer keeps feezing, sending error messages (meaningless to me), shutting down, going slow, etc. From trying to establish what is going wrong, I got through to a site suggesting that I use a 'registry cleaner' which apparently would fix the problems. I got on to one of the registry cleaning sites and used the free scan - which identified 400 problems???!!!! Then suggested I downloaded/bought the clean up fixer software. I have no idea at all whether this would be a good move, or am I just paying out money to potentially make the problem worse? I am in UK, and it appears from what I have read that the cleaner most recommended (if you believe the blurb) is 'Register Easy', but the cost is around £20.

Thus, does anyone know if it will help, and is it worth it? Any replies, words of one syllable please. My computer knowledge is a bit like my vehicle knowledge - I have driven for 30 years, and great if the car goes - no accidents - but if something goes wrong - I don't have a clue - so patience, please.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Freezing, shutting down etc points to something more than a registry cleaner will sort, but this is a safe free one to use.http://www.ccleaner.com/
Also defrag your hard disk and post back if/when you still have problems.

There is a program called regseeker. It is a free program to clean the registry. Just go to Google and type in "regseeker". It is the very first program on there. No problems at all
