I have a very basic video capture card, and I'm looking for software/freeware that I can set a start and end time to record. Can anyone suggest a basic software package?

You'll have to find out whether your capture card is "Video For Windows" compatible, because many capture cards have one program that they're designed to work with, and won't work in third party software at all. I've got a capture card like that, it doesn't get recognised by third party programs. If it's not Video For Windows compatible, it'd be a case of searching for that feature in the bundled software, if it's not there, it won't be possible.

It's pot luck whether such apps work due to the nature of video cards.
Not of any use to you but I have my own system which I can guarantee works with absolutely any capture system. I use Macro Express, a versatile keystroke utility. You have to tailor macros to suit a particular software but it works fine because it uses the capture card's own manual controls. Longest time I was away I recorded and did still captures of 30 or so tv programs.
