Software panning?

Hello!

I got Eee pc with only a 1024x600 screen. Very small, but it has an option to have 1024x768 screen mode with hardware panning where the viewport follows the mouse.
But now I'm thinking I want more! Does anyone know software that enables you to have e.g. a desktop of 2048x1536 or even bigger and then have software panning where the viewport is following the mouse?
That would be really great! Also for desktop users, saves them buying extra monitors!

Thanks!
Jack.

I have done this before without any additional software, but I'm never sure how I do it

it usually happens when I duplicate my display and the target is larger than my laptop screen, so it appears normal on the display and pans on my screen

see if you can enable unsupported resolutions and just run a really big one

Thanks!

When I deselect "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" I get a list of all the modes this video card is supportting. running now 1920*1080! This is great!

Gimespace desktop extender gives similar functionality, it has no desktop size limits, only the size of each window is still limited to the physical screen, that is very annoying. For that your solution is better!
