Software to check my HD health

Is there a software that can verify my hard drive's health and tell me if it's safe to put my data on it?

A technician of my computer store told me that there were many warnings when he tested my HD and that I should buy a new one, but this HD actually works very fine, and I have some reason to not trust him.

HDTune Pro (free trial) will tell you if there is a issue. If your using Seagate HDD then you can download their SeaTool and test that way.

WD has one too but not sure what its called.
