I’m having problems, not sure if this is the right thread, but it does concern hard drives
Prologue

I have two new sandisks I was going to use them instead of duel booting
I unplugged the HDD(Ubuntu) to try to install windows8 with just one the sandisk plugged in but my installation disk failed.
I had to abort. when I plugged my HDD (Ubuntu) back in I got this, with no Ubuntu detected

I rechecked my cables to be sure everything was plugged in correctly, Still no boot
so I headed toward BIOS
first screen when heading to BIOS

I’ve seen this the entire 6 months I was duel booting before the initial problem
Someone said this had something to do with RAID? That’s my Ubuntu drive

and then this

Try resetting cmos. Do this by unplugging power from power supply, remove cmos battery from motherboard, press and hold power button on case for 10 seconds then wait 10 minutes. Then reinsert battery, reinsert power to power supply and try booting up.

Ok That got my HDD to show again because it was the only drive.
I shut the machine down and plugged in my SSD they all disappeared again.
reset CMOS again and SSD showed but not the HDD?
I need to copy the HDD to the SSD but I cant seem to get them both to show at the same time

Please see pictures. I didn't put them in line to save people's bandwidth if they are just browsing.

okay here is part of the problem
my IDE HDD shows here befor BIOS screen

after the BIOS reset My HDD plugged in alone showed in the same spot as the SSD is now so i though evething was ok
I shut it down plugged the power into my Sata SSD with out unplugging my HDD and rebooted the HDD is replaced by the Sata SSD they both want to show in the same spot?

I'm assuming you have jumper issue. HD and cd drive shouldn't be used on the same ide cable. Make sure you have the jumpers set correctly on the drives.

I apologize I didn't clarify
The HDD is IDE
the SSD is Sata and it's 2.5 (doesn't appear to have jumpers)
so they aren't on the same cable

Loose power or data connections? Just drawing at straws here.... Or motherboard is starting to fail on you.

That's the answer for that question? or was this the answer for the deleted thread about CMOS

Answer for you question here. No need for a new thread, when we are technically trying to answer that in this thread.

The IDE cable has [master] printed on the end of it but there's no way its going connect the slave DVD and then twist around and be able to reach the drive.
here's my drive info

Your hard drive is set for cable select which means it needs to go on the last connector on the cable. The cd drive looks like its set for slave. In my experience with IDE drives, you want either both cable select or 1 set for master and the other set for slave if going on the same cable. Are you currently using 2 ide cables to connect hdd and dvd drive or how are you connecting them? But to be honest, your hdd is 10 years old and I wouldn't be using it much longer especially if you have important data on it.

So in the end, what are you wanting to achieve? Are you wanting ubuntu on 1 SSD and windows on the other SSD? I'm just trying to see if there is an easy way around this. I've had some issues on older boards with SSD and AHCI mode. You can try changing sata operation to ide/compatibility and see if that helps.

Yes I want to be able to switch drives instead of Duel booting. I have a trayless enclosure I haven't installed yet.

But at this point all I want is to copy the Ubuntu to drive as is to the SSD.

I'll install Windows fresh because I already lost that OS and drive info with a drive gone bad.

Drives are not meant to be swapped in and out of your case like VHS tapes. You have some very screwy understanding of how computers work mate. I saw in your other thread you were trying to get drives that were set up to run under IDE controller mode to AHCI controller mode and expected them to work.

The BIOS has a boot table in it. If you swap drives out as if they are 8-tracks all the time, the bios isn't going to magically know what's going on.

This should be obvious.

I wonder- do you not want to run a dual boot system just because you don't know HOW? Because selecting an OS when you fire your PC up is WAY easier than taking the side panel off and physically swapping a drive like it's a cassette in your walkman.
