Some advice needed

Hi everyone,

Im trying to fix up my girlfriends laptop for her as its been on the brink of being lobed into the bin for a few months! Im on it writing this but its not been the same since it crashed about a year ago.

It turned out there were thousands of virus's on it, so many I think it would be easier to completely wipe everyhting.

My main question is if I just rip out the present riddled hard drive, bin it and replace it with a nice shiney new upgrade will that completely solve the virus problem?

One more slightly more legal question, I want to upgrade my laptop to Win7, but will I be able to upgrade my girlfriends aswell? In other words, will one windows7 install off the shelf kit upgrade 2 computers legally?

I know these may be stupid questions but Im pretty new to the inside of a computer and am a little unsure how they tick!!

Cheers in advance for any help :)

Yes sir.

Legally? No.. If you just buy one regular windows 7 home premium it's for that one pc. You can buy the windows 7 family pack though, which allows you to install on up to 3 computers.

Why would you replace the harddrive because it has viruses? No you cant install a upgrade on two different computers.

Is replacing the hd not the best solution? I'd be afraid if I attempted to wipe it there might be a stubborn bugger left behind.

Thanks for all the advice, and not the usual guff you seem to get on forums these days. Much appreciated :)

When you install the new OS (Windows), you will "use all the partitioned space". This will automatically wipe out everything on the disk and you'll have your fresh beginning. But if you just upgrade, you'll keep all of your files that you do NOT want. So, do a fresh install and if the disk is faulty (and it probably isn't, since you're writing from it) it'll tell you during the install. Then you can buy a new HDD and replace. For now just go with the fresh install and before you order W7, make sure your PC's can actually support it. If you have Vista, they will. If you have XP with little RAM and HDD small in size, think it over. Hope you solve your prob.

So when installing the new OS it clears what's there? Software, virures the lot?? Mine would take windows7 as it's running a crashy version of vista at the minute which is killing me, but my girlfriends will need a new Hd and ram...

I think I might talk her into a cheap net book seeing as she only really uses it for web browsing, upgrading her own is gonna cost a similiar amount. I see Dell Ireland are selling a wee mini for €280 at the minute which would be perfect for her (and me for holidays)
