Some Advice on Hard Drive Imaging

2048Megabytes

I want to copy an image of my 232 gigabyte hard drive to a 74 gigabyte hard drive. Is it possible to reduce the 232 partition size to 74 gigabytes and copy an image to the smaller 74 gigabyte hard drive?

You'd have to compress the 232GB drive's contents to fit on a 74GB drive. To do that, you'd need a THIRD drive to work with to hold the compressed files; you can't, as far as I know, compress and transfer at the same time.

Chances are you wouldn't be able to compress 232GB of data to one-third the size, anyways. Best way that I know of is to either copy to a drive that's bigger than 232GB, or do some drastic housecleaning, and saving a lot of archive-type data on DVDs.

For anyone interested, I just downloaded the program Gparted Version 0.4.6-1. I resized my NTFS partition using it to 73.2 gigabytes. It is a great program for resizing partitions on a hard drive.
