i've just about decided i need to just make a new computer. i have one i just got like three months ago, but i'm fairly certain the motherboard is fried. (look for my previous thread called "what's wrong with my pc?" for details) so here's the thing... does a fried motherboard also mean - fried cpu/ram/everything in pci slots? on the plus side i wanted a gaming pc anyway. here's a list of things i'd like suggestions on.

-i need a reasonably priced motherboard (preferrably with sli or crossover technology)
-i need a current gpu... i'd like pci-e at least 256. sli or crossover ready
haven't firmly decided on ati or nvidia. leaning more on ati though.

if all my stuff isn't fried, then currently i have
-a P4 3.0 mhz (i think its slot size is 775)
-512 mb ram
-creative sound blaster live 5.1
-bfg 5500 oc from wal-mart (want to replace either way really)
-200 gig hard drive

if all that stuff is fried, i'd like suggestions on
-amd or pentium (i'll do mostly gaming on this pc... but assuming the other computer is occupied, i'd also use autoCAD and ms office.
-i really can't tell the difference in ram types (SD,DD.. other if applicable)
so a way to decide would help.

my wife and i talked about it a little and she's gonna let me use my tax return for this project.

so here we have a budget of 700.00

my dream is to have a pc that will run current games smoothly (not necessarily on max settings, but that wal-mart bfg claims 256 and on painkillers lowest settings it still chugged horribly) so if game type matters for things like this, i like first person shooters, action, and strategy. current favorites... painkiller, roller coaster tycoon 3, and various emulators (snes, genesis, n64) what do you suggest?

i doubt the harddrive is fried, and the soundcard shouldn't be fried eaither. The cpu might be the ram might be.

If you're gonna do aloto f gaming, I suggest you go AMD, therefore using DDR ram. With a 700 dollar budget, you should be able to get a 6800GS, and if some of your parts isn't fried, you might even be able to get a 7800GT.

Did you buy this computer new? If that is the case, surely the motherboard will still be coverd by the manufacturers warranty.

i would be... but

it would still be under warranty, but i voided the warranty when i installed an aftermarket video card myself.

Installing a video card shouldn't void the warranty on the motherboard. Perhaps try contacting the manufacturer directly.

Good NEWS!!

some good news here. i talked to sony and they sya it is under warranty, but they thought if i wiped my hd, and re-installed windows it would save me some time. turns out i actually did get a virus. my sony pc has never been connected to the internet, so i thought that wouldn't even be possible. but i transfer files to it daily from my flash drive - bingo. i downloaded something including a virus and the other computer (which has no protection) caught it. so here's the new thing. actually... i'll start a new thread, even though i already asked this... i can get really specific this time because i know what i have works. i just need a better video card... and maybe some ram... possibly cordless mouse. so anyway... look for my new thread. i'll call it "recommend a video card for me". thank you all for your suggestions. i'd be pc-less without you. -randall.

Yes it means all is fried, give the parts to me ;)

I would need a reasonably priced daughterboard

believe me, it is ... fried

forget about building a computer for yourself

my wife and i talked about it a little and she's gonna let me use my tax return for this project. so here we have a budget of 700.00

for 700 you get a good custom build one (build by profs)

get a video card for 700 bucks and you can play almost all of the "current" games. No matter what card it is, main thing the price is hot.
