Some help please before I just go and buy a Dell....

Now that I have your attention.....For years I have purchased Dell computers for my office. Most recently I had an HP which has has 4 hard drives in 6 months.

Yesterday I bought a new notebook an IBM Thinkpad and it is a good machine for traveling. Now I need a desktop badly......I have heard that AMD 64 X2 is just as good if not better than the Intel D.....so I want to buy a maching which is used for business not gaming 18 hours a day...with Outlook, 2 Internet Explorer windows, 1 word window all the time and some photoshop editing of jpg's sometimes.

Who is the best maker? I want a 3.2mhz Intel or 4800 AMD with 2 gig of Ram and a good video card...I don;t want to wait as I have a great broadband....

What are the suggestions...a Dell with these specs is $1950....who is a good maker that I can get a great machine for a similar price but I don't need it customized for games.

Thank you

Elliot

You just described a 333mhz machine! Why do you need this SUPER DUPER computer that can bring you to the moon, when you only need to go to the livingroom? Seriously, you dont want a super gaming machine, but you want the 64 x 2? Or a 3.2 with 2gb ram and "a good video card". If thats all you want the PC for save your money! USE YOUR PDA!

Exactly Trizoy.

Why waste your money elazarus? 3.2mhz Intel or 4800 AMD with 2 gig of Ram and a good video card is OVERKILL... you will be wasting your money. My aunt just spent $1600 on a laptop for her kid (my cousin). I told her that her kid can do everything he needs to do on a $600 or $700 machine (He plays computer games online). She didnt listen to me and wasted almost a grand...

I hear what you are saying...but I do want some quality....

as I mentioned the HP needed 4 hard drives in 6 months......

When I am online...I do not like to wait and i want the computer to move fast....so if I don't need "overkill" what do I actually need?

CPU?
Video Card?
How much Ram...I have 1.5 gig in my notebook
The Hard Drive size and sound cards don;t matter.......but I just want to click and have a program open immediately and move.....I don't like to wait.

Thank you

Maybe a Celeron. They have machines from Dell that will suit your needs for under $500.

Video Card?

Very low end, if one at all. The onboard graphics that Dell sells will suit you.

How much Ram...

256mb to 1gb will be plenty.

but I just want to click and have a program open immediately and move

All new computers will do that, once they age, they slow down. My parents Dell was lightning fast 4 years ago, now it takes almoost 10 seconds to open simple programs like word. And trust me, their machine was top of the line when it was new.

You are wasting your hard earned $$ on a $2k machine when you could go to Dell and spend $500 on something that will suit you better, then you could do something else with the rest of that money. :)

Intel Pentium-4 Processor 640 [3.2GHz]
1024 MB [512MB X2] DDR-400
Nvidia Geforce 6200
Maxtor 160 GB 7200 RPM 8MB
52x32x52 CD-RW
RT Monitor ViewSonic 17"
Windows (pre-formated)

You can get this at Ibuypower for $883. Its good for what your doing and you computer will run nice. Also in your post there was something about IE.... If you want your computer to keep running well with little spyware and popups get firefox.

why would u possible need a dual-core for? You can just get a pentium4 2.8Ghz with 512mb-1gb of ram, and a video card for less then $100.

The specs you just posted would be for an excellent gaming computer, not a business one.

you dont even need a 3.2Ghz p4, you can do just great with a p4 2.8Ghz for much cheaper, or even a sempron or celeron. And i would only get 1gb if you will be editing large photos, usually 512mb does a good job, and you can get a FX5500 would be good, since your not playing games or anyhting, no need for a nice card.

While I like ibuypower, I dont think he'll like the fancy ass cases they come with.....

Funny, after the HP crashed I brought home my office Dell 2.53 512 ram.....

which is 4-5 years old.....it hangs....and it really has slowed down.

I looked at getting more ram and it is not supported......So while I feel I can pay more than $700-800 and you may be right that $2k is more than I need, I still need quality....

I really must stress that this computer is working 18 hours a day and 350 e-mails...and opening and closing programs.....

So with all due respect...I do want speed.

Thank you all

Elliot

what your talking about right now is your internet speed :P buy a $500-$600 dell and use the rest of the money for faster internet

Get faster internet speed???? Look at this.....

According to DSL reports, I just did the test:

2005-09-25 13:14:29 EST: 3867 / 508
Your download speed : 3960021 bps, or 3867 kbps.
A 483.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 521036 bps, or 508 kbps.

Aside from a T1 you can't get much faster...so I don't think it is the internet speed.....

And I just looked it up and my current 2.53 512 Ram can only support 768 Ram...so upgrading the ram is out of the question....

Regards

Elliot

The HP that just crashed 3.0 1gig 256 video was much faster.....

this machine is 4-5 years old and the MS Windows Home does not measure up to MS Pro.....it has just lost its legs.

T1 is only 1.544MBps

Dude. Pretty much any computer you buy (even at a store like CompUSA or BestBuy) for about $800 will kick the crap out of your current machine. CompUSA currently has a dual core AMD 64 x2 HP Media Center for about $900, or a PentiumD for about a grand, methinks. Just use the same old monitor you have now. Comes with 1GB of ram I think.

For what you';ve noted there, there's not a world of difference between the setups: you might as well get a PentiumD setup as it would be cheaper

as I mentioned the HP needed 4 hard drives in 6 months......
Has nothing to do with either HP or the next computer yer buying

Agreed although for a reasonable amount more (surprsingly little actually), a baseline PentiumD can be had which will well suit his current future requirements.

Depends on what he is doing with Photoshop :)

I hope he doesnt buy a computer based on its case....

Yeah, my 400 mhz PII opens programs instantly, and its worth about $80 today...
I think our definitions for instantly are slightly different ... also not just the load time ... the filter application times will improve with a better processor

Aside from a T1 you can't get much faster...so I don't think it is the internet speed.....
Unless yer a heavy uploader, a T1 is slower.

T1 is only 1.544MBps
Thats fully bi-directional though

fast internet speed has almost nothing to do with the hardware of the PC, except of course your modem. going fast online has to do with internet service and LAN or Modem speed.
