how many hard drives can i have in one windows based computer? does an intel or amd processor affect this? someone please explain what a controller is.

generally it depends on your motherboard, older ones can support 4, newer ones with sata around 8 (that is if u dont want a CD/dvd drive in), the processor does not affect this. I would say that cooling and PSU size have more effect on this.

when u say that older ones can support 4 and newer ones around 8 are u talking about hard drives or controllers and someone explain what a controller is and what its used for

i was talking about hard drives, but obviously if you have those pci cards and take into account external usb ones then in fact you could have infinitely many hard drives connected to your pc. :)

i think a controller is the circuit board on teh back of teh hard drive correct me if im wrong.

Controllers for the most part, are implemented in hardware ... meaning that "if it fits, then it works". What they do is allow the rest of the computer to interact with the attatched components.
