Someone Recommend a Version of Linux

i bought an xp cd from some guy off craigslist. and either i assembled my computer incorrectly or his cd doesnt boot. decided to go with linux. Can anyone recommend a version with a nice graphical interface and that is intuitive. Also, where do i get it and how will i know if it is bootable. Any help is appreciates, thanks. Ill probably have dozens more questions to follow since i know nothing about this topic.
 
well the top one is ubuntu i also heard linux mint is good. i go with fedora core but everyone has there opinion. if your a biginer i would say ubuntu is a easer one to go with but everyone likes to experiment. me, i have about 40 GB of linux distros on my hd.
 
could someone send me a link to where i could download ubuntu. Also what is used for the internet, music, antivirus, software and other software? Can i just burn this as an iso file and it will boot? Thanks for any help.
 
yes just burn it, it is a iso and will boot up from the cd also look at the secount post for a link
 
Its 700 mb for 7.10 :D. took me 10 mins. And Dont worry about about anti virus. Ubuntu is immune. There are anti viruse for those who are still scared but rly there not needed. You can get a virus scanner tho. It comes with firefox which is better then the default Windows internet. comes with a music player but you can get itunes 7.0 or something working under wine. it comes with lots of softwares. Want more and you can just download via terminal. Takes a bit 2 get used to customizing the looks.
 
wow its working, this is so cool. Im really glad i was sold a nonbootable xp cd. My whole purpose in doing this was just for fun. Not only am i building my first computer, but i get to try a new os. Problem though, the computer froze during installation, any suggestions

maybe it didnt freeze, but its a black screen and its not doign anything. am i supposed to press a button or something

i downloaded the 64 bit version if that helps. My bios says i have a 2.33 ghz intel core 2 that will support 64 bit, but maybe it doesnt?

you dont need antivirus on ubuntu, its essentially a virus-free system.
the only way you can get something bad is if you download it by intentionally clicking on it or run firefox as "sudo firefox" (without quotes) in Terminal.

No, it is not. It is very hard to get a virus, but Linux is by no means 'immune'.

AV programs for Linux are generally not to protect Linux users, they're there to prevent the unknowing spread to a Windows-based system.
 
Nothing is immune. Windows is targeted the most, but I'm sure there are viruses some where for any OS of your choice. I know there were seven viruses that Norton had in it's database for our PDA's at the hospital :P

Anyway, Ubuntu or Debian are the two I've used. Eh, there was another I simply loaded as a Live disk that had tons of eye candy, including a decent 3D game/demo as well. Shoot, I can't remember it... but the main differentiation between the releases is primarily features. Why not make a few LiveCDs and play around with them? Or even try something like VMWare and make a few virtual machines to play with. I have Debian and CentOS loaded on my computers now through VMWare(for school...)
