Well before we do anything, you probably should find the drivers for that machine. I glanced at Asus's website and they had nothing but Vista drivers. Most things could probably be found elsewhere, but I have found some compatibility issues with some machines. For example, for the life of me, I could not get the wireless card to work on my previous HP dv6000 laptop after installing XP.

I'm sure you could go through device manager and find what hardware you have, and that may be enough for that laptop. From there you just search around the internet. I'm pretty sure I read that laptop had an ATI GPU, so go to ATI's website and grab the mobility driver set...

The actual process of installing windows is straight forward. I could type them all out, but you can find the process around the internet.
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html (go about half way down to "Steps to Clean Install XP") However, once you get Windows loaded, I'm certain most all the hardware will require drivers.

metallicam,
If you're not familiar with how to install an OS, it may be your best bet to take your laptop some place and have a professional install it for you. I'm not sure how it works since I do all my own work, but I wonder if a store will install it for you if you buy XP from them? Heck, maybe the place where you got the laptop from can cut you a deal. XP is not hard to install.....boot from CD and follow on screen instructions. It will also handle all the re-formatting for you before installing. As others have said, make sure you have the drivers for your laptop on CD or downloaded from ASUS. Good luck and happy late B'day!

Here's a link I found to help you out on doing a clean install of XP Pro: http://www.socrtwo.info/cleanxpinstall.htm
