Ok, well first I'm glad to meet you all. I'm hoping I can get some advice. I'm by far not a novice when it comes to computers, but now I'm stuck. I bought an HP Pavilion a345w desktop from my friend, which did NOT have a processor, memory, or CD-ROM drive. Now the memory I know any PC2700 DDR will work from the specs, but the processor. Does HP use proprietary motherboards, meaning do I have to buy a processor from THEM for it to work? If not, what's the max speed I can run at? Also, is this mobo and chipset Hyper-Threading capable? I'd GREATLY appreciate anyone's help in this matter. Thanks!

Regardless of your tech knowledge, you should know google :P

Base processor
Intel Pentium4 / 2.6 GHz
400MHz front side bus
Socket mPGA478

so its P4 socket 478

found this quote about the same motherboard from another thread

If you're intent on keeping the mobo, upgrade to the highest P4A you can get your hands on or afford... the 400Mhz FSB of the NorthwoodA will be the greatest limiting factor

dont need to buy from them i doubt and the bios shouldnt be locked down to prevent upgrading...if it is then a bios flash should solve that issue.

I think you should just look up on the HP website, to see what it had before for a cpu, or at least get the motherboard details and post back.
