Something dead?

Well a little while ago my brothers mobo die (or at least I thought so). One day he went to power it up and nothing came on the screen, the computer was running. So I though maybe it's his gfx card, but then I found out his cd-rom drives weren't working/ getting and power, so then I was like it's the mobo, S

So anyways we then bought a new mobo/cpu and installed them. Well it turns out his computer did the same exact thing. His computer would start, but nothing come on the screen and none of the cd-roms work. Although later on, I found saw that his chipset fan and gpu fan were both working fine?

What do you guys think might be the problem. So about this being all jumbled, I'm in a rush.

Thanks Bob.

It could be alot of things but the mobo and cpu are out because like you said, you tested a new one. I assume all the fans are working.

Well.

The first set that fried was a msi/754/sempron
The second set was a msi/939/athlon 64

The strange part is that all the fans are working (case, north bridge, gpu, cpu), but none of the cd-roms are working and there is no video on the screen.

The psu is most likly going to get replaced, just because I don't like gerneric psu's. However I don't think that is the problem at all.

I don't understand how the cpu fan and northbridge fans are working, I'm starting to guess that it is a fauly mobo, but it is kinda of rare to get two mobo's with the exact same symptoms.

Thanks for all the help,
Bob.

I have had 2 motherboards back to back not work and had to send them back. You are right, it is rare though and I don't think that is the problem. When you go the new motherboard did it suggest to buy a certain CPU?

It sounds like a POST error, try this. Take the battery out of your motherboard for up to a minute, then put it back in and start up the computer. If it still doesn't work, then make sure your video card is all the way in its slot and that every power supply cable is plugged in where it needs to be (24/20-Pin = Motherboard, 6/4-Pin = Video Card, 4-Pin = DVD/CD ROM, Hard Drives etc.) Then try again.

It depends on the motherboard, on my last computer I RMAed a 6800 about 5 times until I realized that I just wasn't pushing the card in all the way, there weren't any extra beeps then.

Wouldnt it beep if the video card was not in right?
Nope. It would make no sound at all, because a video card is not needed for the computer to run, only for you to see anything. Why would you need that? :P

Like I said, it depends, there are motherboards that won't POST if there isn't a video card in place. It normally happens on motherboards without integrated video, but not many.
