Something is seriously wrong with my hard drive

I noticed that after I installed GTR 2, everytime I loaded the game the small intro FMV would lag like crazy and my hard drive would make a loud click about twice in a period of a minute. I thought everything was fine until burning 4.5GB from the drive to a DVD took 28 minutes today. I downloaded HD Tach and its average read time is at a steady 3.0MB per second. Wow. Now I can even notice a very faint high pitched squealing noise coming from it. The funny thing is that a S.M.A.R.T check indicates the drive is fine. I'm guessing its not.

Anyone know what would cause thins kind of thing to happen?
 
SMART is far from perfect. If you really want to test your drive, look for some diagnostic tools from the HD manufacturer. There are some extended tests that'll probably keep your computer busy all night. However, even they aren't 100%.

I say just keep some good backups handy and keep on trucking. If your drive dies, you're ready. However, it could last another 10 years :P
 
I really should make some backups...

But I took it out last night and decided to put it back in this morning and run HD Tach again. Now its average read time is 48MB per second. Well thats much better, and its no longer making the high pitched squeal.

Also on another topic, is it possible someone can change my forum name? I don't know what I was on when I typed that.
